The new SG role will assist VANGO in the full-time operation of the office and working with Partners and stakeholders to strengthen the role of civil society in Vanuatu.
VANGO has been revitalised by the government in 2017 by then Minister of Internal Affairs Andrew Napuat who appointed a steering committee to elect the board of directors in 2017 after it experienced a sharp decline in 2015 through the ongoing governance and operational issues, which led to mistrust and loss of confidence for the organisation
The present governing Board through the leadership of President Mr. William Nasak is determined to strengthen the governance structure and the institution and working with its members to complement the work of the government to reach to most marginalised, disadvantaged population and the rural communities in Vanuatu through the National Sustainable Development Plan (NSDP). The board of VANGO is represented by INGOs, Local NGOs and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs).
VANGO’s main aim in Vanuatu is for effective coordination of Civil Society Associations (CSOs) and their activities, including networking, reporting, and monitoring. It is the representation of civil society – representing all programs, issues and voices, especially local voices, serve as liaison and national point of contact, and build recognition of all CSOs and their work. In terms of funding – balancing equal funding between International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs), NGOs, and CBOs, mobilising funding and funding support for all members. It also serves as a grant agent, linking to national and international sources of funds, along with other resources such as office.
President Nasak highlighted “VANGO is a new vibrant organization and will support better coordination of NGOs and CSOs to know their role as partner of the government in service delivery.” Also Present at the SG induction meeting was the Pacific Islands of NGOs (PIANGO) representative, Mr. Akmal Ali.
“PIANGO is truly excited with the current progress of VANGO and the recruitment of the new SG,” Mr. Ali commented.
“PIANGO envisioned that VANGO will truly serve its members and the people of Vanuatu effectively and efficiently. PIANGO assures its support to VANGO as a member of the PIANGO in the Pacific region.”
VANGO would like to acknowledge the Australian government through the Oxfam in the Pacific — Vanuatu for the funding support towards institutionalisation of the organisation. It looks forward to working in partnership with its valued members, the donor partners, and the government of Vanuatu to serve the interest of the people of Vanuatu.
